Background on Colossians

The book of Colossians

What you are about to get into could change the lives of students forever. The Bible is clear about the concept of relationships. How we relate to one another and to God is a main idea in every book of the Bible. Jesus summed it up best, didn’t He, when He gave the “Greatest Commandment.” Love God. Love others. That law is the same law. It is what everything hinges upon.

Connections

In Colossians, Paul talks about connections. He begins with the relationship of Christ to God, and his conclusion is clear—they are one in the same. After constructing that theological foundation, he begins to teach through the implications of it. Because Christ is God, we should be connected to Him. Because we are connected to Him, we should be different from the world. Because we are connected to Him, we should love and be active in connecting with other believers.

In this study, the four chapters of Colossians will hopefully come to life for your students. There’s no doubt in my mind it’s just as relevant today as it was when Paul penned the words for the first time. Pick and choose what you want to use, and may the Holy Spirit guide you and your students as you connect with this great New Testament book.
